Putting the hotel industry in context

Last year, Marriott acquired the Starwood chain of hotels.  This made it by far the largest hotel chain in the world with 6,000 hotels, over 1 million hotel rooms,  located in 122 countries.  So where does this rank Marriott in terms of other global companies?  Well, on Forbes list of the top 2,000 companies it ranks 467th.  That’s right, there are 466 companies with greater market value ($35 bn in Marriott’s case) and assets ($24 bn), which is how Forbes ranks companies.
