Radical Innovation Award in hospitality

Despite the fact that it has been going for 11 years I had not come across Radical Innovation (their website is here).  Each year they run a competition for hospitality industry professionals and for students to come up with new concepts and designs for hospitality operations.   The 2017 finalists have just been announced.  In October they will have to present their ideas to an audience of hotel developers, owners, executives and designers who then vote to determine the grand prize winner.

The concepts being judged this year are:

  • “(a) modular design in the form of shipping containers that double as traveling guest suites. Outfitted for luxury, the containers are customizable in terms of layout and design. Guests may travel and dock at one of 13 hotel destinations across the United States. The entire experience may be managed via a customised app”.
  • “a mountain top resort concept…(that) provides warm an bright year round indoor/outdoor tropically inspired environment for guests” on Vancouver Island in Canada.
  • “a treetop resort hotel… which allows for seasonal inhabitation in remote areas”.
  • a hotel “conceived as an inhabitable design gallery”.. (connecting) “local designers with international travellers”.
