Birmingham Children’s Hospital outstanding

Listening to Today on Radio 4 this morning, Sarah-Jane Marsh, the CEO of Birmingham Childrens Hospital was inspirational.  Eight years ago this hospital was identified as having major shorting comings in three key areas of provision.  Today it is the first children’s hospital in the UK to be rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

In discussing how this “transformation” was achieved, Ms Marsh identified a number of things:

  • developing an organisational culture based around compassion and listening to staff
  • developing teamwork
  • adopting a continuous improvement approach led by the employees themselves
