IKEA’s design ethos – think like a software company & open source?

IKEA’s Delaktig sofa comes with a multitude of click-on accessories, as this article explains.   But what is really interesting, from an operations point of view, is how they are thinking about design.

One aspect of this is ‘thinking like a software company’.   This has lead to them using terminology such as ‘platform’ (instead of furniture) and ‘apps’ (instead of accessories).

A second aspect is that the Delaktig range is the result of collaborating with the students at the Royal College of Art – in effect open-sourcing the design challenge.
