Managing short-term inventory – baggage handling at Heathrow T5

So many reasons for posting this video about baggage handling at Heathrow T5:

  • T5 features is a case study (8.2) in our book;
  • the opening of T5 is generally considered to be a good example of how not to do it and a classic example of poor project management (at least at this final phase of the T5 project);
  • the video illustrates the huge back-of-house operation that passengers do not see (the scale of which partly explains the system failures encountered on the first few days of operation, when 23,000 bags were misplaced);
  • it illustrates how inventory management technology originally developed in the manufacturing sector can be applied in the airport context.
