Young people particularly at risk in the workplace

I was going to blog about it being the 40th anniversary of the Health and Safety at Work Act.  So I went to the British Safety Council’s website to see what they said about this.  In doing so, I discovered their “Speak Up, Stay Safe” campaign.  And since our book is aimed at young people about to enter the world of work, I thought this was particularly relevant to this blog’s audience.

It seems that any employee is more likely to be injured at work during their first few weeks in a new workplace, and that a high proportion of these people are young and working in their first job.  The campaign website has a number of features:

  • information for young people about risks and hazards
  • videos illustrating the issues
  • advice for employers with regards the health and safety of young people

The campaign also has its own YouTube TV channel.
