Trends affecting the luxury goods industry

Luxury goods are interesting from an OM perspective because a feature of this sector is its high level control over the whole supply and distribution network.  Deloitte have just published online their first ever, 30-page report on luxury goods, which identifies the top 75 companies operating globally.

A feature of the report is that it identifies the trends currently influencing operators.  In brief, these are:

  • adoption of commerce as a distribution channel
  • influence of social media
  • development of a web-based ‘community’ with an ‘exclusive’ feel
  • expanding global middle class
  • important role that tourism plays in enabling luxury goods sales
  • increased need to be more dynamic and responsive to consumer-led demands
  • opportunity to extend product range to make use of new channels and markets
