Man versus machine – insights from the front line

We were looking for examples of mass production from industry sectors we knew little about, so checked out videos of cosmetic factories.  We came across this one from Italy.  It’s only two minutes long and there’s no commentary, but we think it could make a good Tutorial Activity.  On pages 269 to 271 we discuss ‘material processing technology’.  Students should use this as framework for analysing what role machines, equipment and technology play in this context, whilst also identifying what functions are performed by employees.  There’s a good discussion to be had about why machines do some things, but not others, and whether or not this operation is utilising employees and technology in the ‘right’ ways.
