Implementation – the real challenge in operations management

Knowing what to do is the easy part, it is putting into practice that’s the hard part.  But there is very little written about the practical side of implementation,  That’s why this article in The Manufacturer is so helpful.  It compares two different ways of setting up an ERP system, and outlines their respective advantages and disadvantages.  One approach is to phase it in over a period of time, the alternative is to switch over to the new system as quickly as possible.  Factors to take into account are cost (of course), the range of operations affected, the number of sites occupied, and attitude to risk.  To these we would add the the organisation’s cultural norms when it comes to enacting change.
