Trade shows both reward and drive innovation

I was reminded of what we say on page 320 of Operations Management – “The trade show  is another example of how organisations get and promote new ideas” – when I came across Hotelympia’s Innovation Awards.  This hotel and catering trade show has been going for many, many years.  Originally located at Olympia in West London, it still retains that reference in its name, even though it now takes place at the Excel Exhibition Centre in East London. 

One of the interesting comments made by a previous finalist was that the innovators benefit from receiving feedback from the judges, all of whom have a reputation for innovation.  Such feedback is not just about the product being judged, but also on the new product development process itself.
