Surrey University – where we are based – has always had involvement with the space industry in this country. It pioneered small low cost satellites resulting in the creation of a £100 million p.a. business – Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (now part of EADS-Astrium). SST has launched 39 space missions so far, and is currently producing the 22 satellites for Galileo – Europe’s version of GPS.
Overall the sector is worth £30 billion and employs 30,000 people in the UK – as this BBC video explains.
