How come it’s taken so long….?

It can be miles, and several minutes, from when a plane lands and when it arrives at the terminal building.  This article in The Economist identifies that globally it probably costs $8bn a year for passenger aircraft to taxi to and from the gate, as well as emit tonnes of CO2.  This is because aero engines are very inefficient when used on the ground.   And in addition when they are used for this purpose, there is always the chance that they may ingest debris from the apron and tarmac.  So alternative ways of moving aircraft whilst on the ground are being developed.  The article discusses two – electric motors on the nose wheel, and ‘TaxiBot’, a vehicle that the nose wheel is inserted into and which can be ‘driven’ by the pilot.
