Ford’s new order winner & strategy

This BBC article outlines Ford’s new operations strategy – central to which is producing cars with great fuel economy.  But there are also structural problems to overcome.  One of these is its capacity, which is under utilised.   It would like to close at least one production plant, but politically this is too difficult, so it is trying to negotiate across all its plants new working conditions, which will make it more competitive against Asian manufacturers.  It is also trying to rationalise its supply chain and assembly under its ‘One Ford’ strategy ie a global manufacturing system similar to TPS.
