Operations Insight: Motivation and worldmade wheelchairs

Motivation is an international charity that focus on enabling disabled people in developing countries to be more mobile, through the provision of a wheelchair.   This video explains how their ‘worldmade’ wheelchair is designed, manufactured and assembled to meet the needs of each individual user.   As a charity, Motivation has to keep the cost of each chair to a minimum, so it is designed to cost no more than $100 to manufacture.  To keep distribution costs down, it is shipped in a flat pack, which means that it has to be assembled in whichever country it has been shipped to.  This means that the charity has to train volunteers in how to measure the disabled person for the chair and to then assemble the chair to meet their needs.  They also set up peer-to-peer training so that an experienced user can train a new user in how to get the best out of the chair.
