BBC Worldwide’s distribution strategy

I heard John  Smith, CEO of BBC Worldwide speak at the Hospitality and Tourism Summit 2012 and a video of his presentation is now available on the web.   Apart from poviding some fascinating insights into three of the BBC’s most successful productions, he explains in some detail how his company goes about distributing these products (ie TV programmes) around the world.  A key feature of this is understanding different cultures and knowing how to adapt the product to fit with the specific culture in each country.  He also explains the increasing importance of social media and how viewers are encouraged and supported to have a more experiential engagement with the product, through programme specific retail products and events.
