Health and safety fine

Tata Steel have been fined £500,000 for the death of a worker who fell into a stream of super-heated molten liquid at a steel plant in Wales.  The accident occurred in April 2006, when the plant was operated by Corus Steel.  Tata took over the plant in 2010 and in doing so took on the liabilities of Corus.  The two breaches in health and safety Tata admitted in court were due in part to the channel, along which the molten slag was running, being partially uncovered.  In addition the process produces a great deal of steam, which made it extremely difficult for workers to see where they were going when moving around this part of the plant.
