Operations Insight: Thorntons Chocolates

This comapny features as the opening Case Insight from Chapter 5 (pages 112-113) and we have blogged about it before (February 14th), when we identified it was struggling financially and had to rethink its distribution strategy.  But good news!

Thorntons has just reported its first increase in like-for-like store sales since the first quarter of 2010. The company said sales were up by 0.7% in the fourth quarter to 30 June.  However, as we identified it has closed 36 shops during the period, meaning overall store sales were down £0.7m to £13.7m.  Overall sales increased by 7.8% to £24.7m, driven by continued strong sales through supermarkets.  So it looks like the new operations strategy is working.
